To make the most efficient use of irrigation water is important for growers, especially when there are problems with drought. Some substrates are better than others for optimizing water use. In both the Netherlands and India, Dutch Plantin produces high-quality, uniform and stable cocopeat products. In the Netherlands, largely buffered, and in India, mostly washed or (pure natural) unwashed coir products, depending upon the needs of the client. By being in compliance with international rules and following our own quality management structure, we can ensure good quality and a production structure from source to final product.
Initially, producers used the pure cocopeat in an untreated state as a substrate. It was used for the cultivation of roses and tomatoes, or mixed into composts. It soon became apparent that the coir did not deliver enough calcium to the plants this way. That was due to ‘calcium fixation’.
For many years, the coconut has been renowned for its flesh and milk. However, the shells from coconuts are also used for many different products. Did you know the coconut is also used in food products, as well as cosmetics such as shampoos? Other coconut products include mats and seat stuffing made from coconut fibres. Where does coconut come from and how sustainable is it?
Because growers have less or no options for soil disinfectants anymore, the use of quality substrates is becoming more and more important. On a larger scale also Spanish growers cultivate on substrate. In Spain, the fruit season begins at this time, with large volumes, much diversity and beautiful quality. Dutch Plantin teams up with a local dealer who specializes in irrigation systems for soft fruit. The engineers give growers solid advice, especially on the use of growbags. These growbags can be used up to approximately five years, thanks to the durability of the plastic. Dutch Plantin developed these special growbags, specifically for cultivating soft fruits.
