De meeste kwekers in Nederland telen hun groente op steenwol. Best vreemd als je bedenkt dat een teelt op kokossubstraat veel voordelen biedt. Peter Verberne kan het weten. De paprikakweker uit het Limburgse Horst experimenteerde enkele jaren geleden voor het eerst met kokos. Benieuwd wat het hem opleverde?<\/p>\n

40 duizend growbags<\/strong>
\nEen betere stuurbaarheid van de teelt. En een zo laag mogelijk drainpercentage. Met die doelen voor ogen kozen kweker Peter Verberne en zijn teeltmanager Ren\u00e9 Geurts vijf jaar geleden heel bewust voor kokossubstraat. \u201cWe begonnen voorzichtig met zo\u2019n duizend kokosmatten. Inmiddels hebben we er ruim 40 duizend op 8 hectare\u201d, aldus Peter.<\/p>\n

Heel precies bewateren<\/strong>
\nVerberne is enthousiast over de drainagemogelijkheden van kokos. \u201cAls steenwol ietsje indroogt, dan krijg je die niet meer op vocht; het volume is in principe verloren. Maar kokossubstraat is heel precies te bewateren. Zo geven wij aan het begin van de dag bijvoorbeeld 150 milliliter en dan steeds kleinere beetjes, tot zelfs 25 milliliter per keer. Maar mijn plantjes komen niks tekort, hoor. Je krijgt hier juist sterke planten van.\u201d<\/p>\n

De eerste plantjes<\/strong>
\nVerberne: \u201cIk bespaar water \u00e9n geld. Voorheen, toen ik nog op steenwol teelde, moest elke kubieke meter drainwater dat terugkwam, ontsmet worden. Dat kost geld. Bij kokossubstraten wordt juist elke milliliter gebruikt.\u201d Bij Kwekerij Verberne planten ze bewust niet te vroeg in het jaar. \u201cIn plaats van tegelijk met Spanje op de markt te komen, sluiten we hier juist op aan.\u201d Bekijk de video<\/a> om te zien hoe op 15 januari de nieuwe paprikaplantjes werden geplant bij Kwekerij Verberne.
