Wereldwijd is kokossubstraat d\u00e9 voedingsbodem voor aardbeien en frambozen, en ook steeds vaker voor bramen. De blauwe bes blijft daarbij achter. Deze wordt nog steeds het meest op veensubstraten geteeld. Terwijl juist ook voor deze plant kokos de ideale grondstof is. We leggen uit waarom.<\/p>\n

Veen: een must of niet?<\/h2>\n

Een bodem met een hoge zuurgraad, oftewel een lage pH-waarde, is cruciaal voor een succesvolle teelt van blauwe bessen. Niet voor niets groeit de plant van oudsher op veengrond en werken veel kwekers in Nederland met veenhoudende substraten. Telers in Mexico experimenteerden vijf jaar geleden echter met andere grondstoffen. Sindsdien heeft het kweken van blauwe bessen op kokossubstraat een vlucht genomen.<\/p>\n

Honderd procent puur<\/h2>\n

Niet alleen in Mexico, maar ook in Spanje en Portugal starten elk jaar kwekers met het telen van blauwe bessen op honderd procent puur kokossubstraat. De pH-waarde in kokos is namelijk goed te sturen. Bovendien is de bewatering beter te beheersen dan bij een teelt in de volle grond of op andere substraten. Op de foto het resultaat: deze planten zijn in 2015 in Spanje op honderd procent puur kokossubstraat geplant. Met een goede en stabiele kwaliteit substraat gaat deze teelt nog vele jaren mee!<\/p>\n

Een milieuverantwoord alternatief<\/h2>\n

Nog een reden om over te stappen op kokossubstraat: het is een stuk duurzamer dan substraten op basis van veen. Want als veen eenmaal afgegraven is, duurt het duizenden jaren voordat de grond weer uit veen bestaat. Terwijl kokosnoten elk jaar opnieuw aan de boom groeien.
