Hoewel lang niet iedereen de verschillen tussen deze twee boomsoorten kent, bestaan die wel degelijk.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dutchplantin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/palmboom.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[gallery-57hy]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24572\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dutchplantin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/palmboom.jpg\" alt=\"Rob van Berkel\" width=\"250\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Oliepalm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>De oliepalm wordt massaal verbouwd op grote plantages. De grootste productielanden zijn Indonesi\u00eb (6 miljoen hectare) en Maleisi\u00eb (4 miljoen hectare). Het enige product dat uit de vrucht van de boom (de palmkernel) gewonnen wordt, is palmolie (wereldwijd ruim 48 miljoen ton). Die olie wordt gebruikt voor onder andere margarine, frituurolie, zeep, biodiesel en voor het opwekken van energie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kokospalm<\/strong><br \/>\nDe kokospalm wordt voornamelijk verbouwd door lokale boeren in Indonesi\u00eb (2,6 miljoen hectare), de Filippijnen (2,3 miljoen hectare) en India (1,9 miljoen hectare). Door de relatieve kleinschaligheid en de betrokkenheid van de lokale bevolking is deze activiteit sterk ingebed in de samenleving. Uit de kokosnoten die aan de boom groeien, komen tal van producten voort. Kokosmelk, kokosolie (wereldwijd 3,3 miljoen ton), kokosvezels (voor touw, matten, borstels en matrassen) en kokosgruis. Onze coir pith is dus in wezen een bijproduct van de traditionele vezelindustrie in Azi\u00eb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Onderzoek<\/strong><br \/>\nHoewel de kokospalm dus veelal lokaal en traditioneel verbouwd wordt, wil dat niet zeggen dat de cocopeat slechts in beperkte mate te produceren is. Integendeel. In 2001 deed Dutch Plantin een studie naar het bepalen van de potenti\u00eble jaarlijkse productie van cocopeat. We concludeerden dat je die als volgt kunt berekenen. Op 1 hectare verbouwgrond is plek voor 150 kokospalmen, die per stuk ongeveer 75 kokosnoten per jaar voortbrengen. Iedere kokosnoot levert 60 gram droog kokosgruis op. Als we deze formule loslaten op het aantal hectare grond waarop tegenwoordig kokosbomen verbouwd worden, blijkt dat de jaarlijkse productiecapaciteit ruim boven de 60 miljoen ton ligt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Onuitputtelijk<\/strong><br \/>\nDeze enorme productiecapaciteit geldt jaar in, jaar uit. Kokosnoten zijn namelijk een haast onuitputtelijke bron. Dat komt door het kortcyclische karakter: de tijd tussen twee oogsten is hoogstens \u00e9\u00e9n jaar. Dat is een groot voordeel in vergelijking met traditionele grondstoffen voor potgrond, zoals veen (dat miljoenen jaren nodig heeft om te ontstaan).
