Dutch Plantin begon ruim twintig jaar geleden met de productie van cocopeat. Het product trok al snel de aandacht van kwekers. Zij waren verheugd dat er een nieuw substraat was dat – naast organisch – ook stabiel, luchtig en voldoende watervasthoudend was. En ook potgrondproducenten zagen de voordelen. Zij gingen kokos op grote schaal toepassen om substraatmengsels te verbeteren. Met de introductie van cocochips voegde Dutch Plantin een nieuwe dimensie toe aan de verbetering van potgrond en de ontwikkeling van substraten. Inmiddels is er een nieuwe aanvulling op het assortiment van cocochips: coco-15. Het getal 15 staat voor de gemiddelde lengte van de vezels, te weten 15 mm. Met de ontwikkeling van dit product zijn ook nieuwe teelmogelijkheden ontstaan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Enorme vlucht<\/strong>
\nDe laatste jaren zien we een enorme vlucht in de toepassing van grovere materialen. We hadden al de kokosvezel, een product dat zorgt voor een goede capillaire werking in de potgrond. Maar steeds vaker worden er cocochips gebruikt. In de teelt van orchidee\u00ebn gebeurt dit al langere tijd, omdat juist hier behoefte is aan een zeer luchtig substraat. Tegenwoordig worden cocochips ook meer en meer verwerkt in potgronden, om zo de drainage en luchtigheid te bevorderen.<\/p>\n

Coco-15<\/strong>
\nNaast de kleine en middelgrote cocochips is er nu ook coco-15; een grover materiaal met een gemiddelde vezellengte van 15 mm, dat door zijn maatvoering goed verwerkbaar is. De toepassing hiervan resulteert in een betere drainage en luchtigheid en zorgt daarnaast voor een goede capillaire werking. Bij het produceren van cocochips en coco-15 is de selectie van de juiste grondstoffen in het land van herkomst erg belangrijk. Zo moeten de kokosschillen oud genoeg zijn om tot stabiele cocochips te komen. Bij het gebruik van jonge schillen is de kans op snelle vertering namelijk groter, waardoor de structuur van de potgrond in hoog tempo verslechtert. Dit leidt uiteindelijk tot een minder luchtig mengsel dat snel ‘in elkaar zakt’. Met de introductie van coco-15 biedt Dutch Plantin dan ook een waardevolle aanvulling op het al vertrouwde assortiment cocochips.<\/p>\n
