Three weeks ago, at the 20th of December of 2012, a Dutch Plantin customer in Belgium harvested his first new tomatoes. These were planted under assimilation lights on October the 15th and already after 3½ weeks rooted through the whole bag. The grower is already growing for several years on coco, and he is very pleased with our mixture with coco pith and coco chips. He emphasized that wetting up the compressed coco never before was that even and easy as this new experience on Dutch Plantin growbags on 14 ha of tomatoes.

Dutch Plantin considers sustainability as a broad concept. For us it doesn’t end with efficient use of water or pressing coco to minimize fuel waste. Sustainability means taking care of 'the Dutch Plantin Family' as well. That is why we have good health and safety policies for our employees. But like every family does, we also celebrate together.

Coco is of common use in growing soft fruits like strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and redcurrant berries. Growers of strawberries often use substrates consisting of 100% coco peat. Growers of other soft fruits tend to use a more loose and airy mixture, which has coco fibres or coco chips added to it. In cooperation with DLV Plant, Dutch Plantin has set up several special tests at KICK Randwijk, to study the differences between both types of substrates.

Already for some years now UK growers are happy working with coir briquettes of Dutch Plantin. It is easy putting the bricks of approx. 7 ltr into the pots at the field, expand them with a starter solution and then it is ready to plant. We put approx. 1850 pieces per pallet and with 20 pallets in a 40ft container you get coir to fill up 37.000 pots. If you use potted propagated plants (1,8-2 ltr) you just leave 1 pot empty every 3-4 pots. Easy, fast & cheap.

In professional horticulture, coco seems to be becoming a more important player as substrate, every year. Nevertheless, experiences are not always positive and therefore we focus on two important characteristics of coco: the physical aspects and the chemical aspects which can highly vary depending on the supplier.

Production capacity and storage facilities are crucial for Dutch Plantin. How else can we meet the expanding demand for our products? Therefore, we have invested in multiple warehouses, that guarantee our deliveries, even in rainy times like we have seen in the past few months. In India, we increased the number of presses. As a result, we were able to produce and deliver more growbags than ever before. Another effect of this investment is the fact that we are able to load more growbags on one pallet and lower the shipping costs per growbag. Furthermore we are planning on investing in a new track and trace system. This will also include a modernization of the pallet labels.

Dutch Plantin aims to centralize the supply of raw materials for coir products in India, to ensure the quality of our products and to meet our customers' standards in the best possible way. As an answer to the ever increasing demand for coir pith, we see organizations enter the market with coir products of fluctuating quality levels. Especially too young coir pith can cause problems in the growing process, because it cannot provide the necessary stability, which means that the product cannot be buffered optimally. This can cause a sudden shortage of calcium en high rates of potassium and boron. For all horticulture products, Dutch Plantin only uses special aged coir that provides the essential stability.

First of all, Dutch Plantin wishes you a happy and healthy 2012. This new year will bring new opportunities, just like 2011. We closed last year successfully, in the Netherlands as well as in India. Our new production site in Boekel (NL) is fully operational, which allows us to meet the increased demand for the various types of coir. In India, we will expand our influence in the production process of coir. Our goal is to monitor and control the quality of the production process from the beginning to the end. In the past, we worked with partners who met Dutch Plantin's standards. But the only way to optimize the quality of our products at all times, is by implementing all steps of the production in our own factories.

Made, the Netherlands, 9 January 2012: In greenhouse trials carried out over the course of 2011 at the facilities of PlantResearch in Made, the Netherlands, the DP Optima™ double layer coco slabs from Dutch Plantin were found to require 10 to 20% less water and fertilizer feed than rock wool slabs of similar dimensions, while still producing the same tomato yield. This would not only make coco slabs well suited for areas where water is a limiting factor in horticultural production, it also provides sustainability benefits in horticultural advanced regions such as Europe or North America.

Dutch Plantin started with the production of cocopeat over twenty years ago. The product quickly got the cultivators' attention. They were pleased that there was a new substrate available that as well as organic, was also stable, airy and able to hold enough water. Potting soil producers also saw the benefits. They started using the coco in large quantities to improve substrate mixes. With the introduction of coco chips, Dutch Plantin added a new dimension to improvements in potting soil and the development of substrates. Since then there is a new addition to the assortment: coco-15. The number 15 represents the average length of the fibres, which is 15 mm. With the development of this product new growth opportunities have emerged.

Biological agriculture - or ecological agriculture - is becoming more and more important. This specific form of agriculture focuses on preserving the environment, the landscape and the wellbeing of animals. Therefore, biological agriculture excludes the use of chemical insecticides and artificial manure, and the products do not contain chemical or synthetic preservatives or ingredients to enhance the color or the flavor. Genetic modification is also not allowed in biological products. In order to meet the mineral need of the crop, animal manure is used. All these measures are used to respect and protect nature's cycles. The increasing demand for biological products creates opportunities for agricultural companies like Dutch Plantin.

At Dutch Plantin, we're very happy to see that our company continuously grows. However, that also means that we have to expand in order to guarantee that we can deliver during the rain season. Therefore, we decided to invest in stockyards at our largest production facility in India. With this investment, we ensure that we can supply our customers, even in times of long continuous rain. Besides the expansion of our stockyards, we decided to add more drying floors and presses. That’s a big leap towards our goal: doubling our production capacity of growbags in the upcoming years.

Dutch Plantin recently developed a new type of growbag, called the Optima. This growbag contains a special mix of both coco pith and coco chips. A mix that offers more stability when it comes to the structure of the growbag. That way, the substrate maintains a higher air content during the years of reuse. We are currently running tests with strawberries, which show a perfect rooting. We have fifteen years of experience in producing special coir as a loose substrate to grow strawberries, which we now used to develop a compressed growbag, that also holds chips.

Dutch Plantin develops products with excellent growing results. That's the main reason why we don't recommend the use of growbags that contain a filling of 100% crushed husk for vegetable crops. A mixture of both chips and coir pith, also referred to as 'Optima cocopeat', has many advantages. First of all, it gives the growbag a higher water-holding capacity, which is a key feature for hydroponically grown vegetables

Young roots are very sensitive to an unbalanced nutrition content, an excessive EC level and harmful elements like chlorine and sodium. To avoid these factors, choosing the right coir substrate is crucial. The widely available unwashed materials offer a rather risky alternative compared to washed and buffered coir. Indeed, it is possible to wash and buffer growbags before planting. But since this period is definitely the busiest one in the lifecycle of the crop, it makes washing before planting too risky for most growers. If we take the money invested for a new crop into consideration, it underlines the importance of a quality substrate and the highest possible reduction of any risk.

During the past year, the weather had a significant influence on our production. Due to an exceptionally long rainy season in India and a seemingly never-ending period of frost in the Netherlands, we were occasionally not able to meet the requirements of our customers completely. And that peeks our pride, which is why we are doubling the capacity of our production location in Boekel. In addition, we are considerably expanding the possibilities of producing and storing cocopeat indoors, so that we will be better able to attune the specific weight of the cocopeat to the needs of our customers.
